It’s no question that we’re living in unprecedented times and we’re all having to make adjustments. As we come to grips with living in this new normal, it’s important that we develop new habits and new ways of thinking.
I’ve been following James Clear, author of the book Atomic Habits, for several months now. He even inspired my word for 2020 – CONSISTENCY. When I chose this word at the beginning of the year, I had no idea how I would be challenged to remain consistent when everything around me has changed. I’m nowhere near perfect and I’ve started over more times than I care to admit. However, these tips have kept me from getting discouraged so I thought I’d share them with you.
James Clear’s 5 tips on how to build a new habit:
- Start with an incredibly small habit.
“A habit must be established before it can be improved.”
- Increase your habit in very small ways.
“Get 1% better each day.”
- As you build, break your habits into chunks.
Use the Goldie Locks method; find the just right.
- When you slip, get back on track.
“Never miss twice.”
- Be patient. Stick to a pace you can sustain.
“It’s not the last workout that gives you a fit body. It’s all the ones that came before.”
