There are many moments when we remember exactly where we were when a significant event took place. Saturday was one of those moments. It was significant, not only because Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the election, but because we made history. And yes, I say we. As a Black woman, woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a mom of two Black girls, I reveled in the sound of the glass ceiling shattering around me.
When I first heard the news they won the election, I was riding with my husband and our good friends headed out of town for a weekend getaway. My husband got an alert on his phone and then we all (except my friend who was driving) dove into our phones for more information. All throughout the day, our running theme was “we won!” You couldn’t tell us nothing.
That night for dinner I had already planned to wear a pink sweater, gold skirt, my fabulous new shoes and pearls, but my outfit took on a whole different meaning once Kamala Harris was elected as the next vice president of the United States. For women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (Vice President-elect Harris and I are both members) pink (and green) and pearls are special to us. I wore my outfit with pride!
Our dinner reservations were at 7:30pm, and once we realized President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris were speaking at 8pm (along with the Clemson-Notre Dame game), we made a plan to watch from our phones during dinner. We were not going to miss it!
The icing on the cake was our amazing meal. But I’ll save that for another post. This was indeed a special day and I will always remember where I was “win.”
Where were you and how did you celebrate this win?
